Hollow grabbed me from the start and kept me hooked until the end. The story is inspired by true events and it mixes a murder mystery with elements of folklore so smoothly that it's hard to tell where one ends and the other one begins.

I found this a fantastic read - didn't want to put it down but didn't want to get to the end and finish it! I remember the miners’ strike which made this book all the more real for me. Can't wait for the next book from this author.

What I found most interesting is that Hollow isn't just about solving crime. It also explores the hidden injustices and forgotten lives swept aside by the larger tides of war and intrigue. It made me think about how many stories like this are lost in history.

What truly makes this book stand out is the depth of its main character. He's not your typical hard-boiled detective. He's complex & flawed and has to deal with prejudices against him. It's refreshing to follow a character whose internal battles feel just as urgent as the external ones.

Read this so quickly as it was such a page turner, if you like BBC gritty dramas then you will love this. Each character had such depth it felt like you really got to know them. Rainsford writes superbly for his first book, hopefully we will get to read more of his work.
